Lisbon surf spot: Costa da Caparica

9 February 2019 By 6 Comments

One of the most trendy capital of Europe in 2018 it’s certainly Lisbon. Warm, cozy and very affordable after a crisis period it became a valid alternative to Spain, growing in reputation and organization, more oriented to mass tourism. You’ll have opportunity to relax but surely it’s a city where you have to walk a lot. If you are looking for new experiences and you would like to try surfing, here it’s the right place, between the best in Europe for this sport.

Being in a southern position of the continent it has a really warm whether the whole year. For who’s learning surf it represent and ideal location, being close to the ocean and with camps for any level and experience.

Costa da Caparica: chill and surf close to the city

Lisbon is located close to a river and doesn’t have access to the sea which, anyway, it’s not so distant. Along the Portuguese’s seaside there are schools and waves for any needs. If you are experienced and reckless there is the “Praia do Guincho”, very nice for windsurf as well. In case you are a beginner and you want to stay closer to the center, the best option is “Costa da Caparica” right after the “25 Abril” bridge famous for being made by the same company of the Golden Gate Bridge in SF.

To go there you have several options, you can go with the bus that leave from Praca de Espanha, you can take the ferry from the Belem Tower or, as I’ve done, rent a car, which I found very cheap compare to other European city.

In this town the good season is synonymous of surf, people of every ages are practicing, from kids to older people.

I’ve spent more than a month here in coastal area and I can just recommend if you are looking for a sporty, alternative and cheap trip. The coast takes inspiration from California’s beaches, there are both modern and old areas, you can see design totems, surf clubs, skaters that cohabit with fisherman and traditions.

In terms of nightlife, don’t expect too much, the only option is go back to the city. However, after a day of surfing and under the sun, you won’t have much energies to dance or going out.

There are may surf-camps, you can choose a single lesson or a pack. If is your first time, to get some confidence you’ll need at least 3 lessons. Food, prices, whether, sport experience and landscape make of Costa da Caparica, one of the best location for surfing in Portugal, close to a capitol city and no so touristic.
